Motivate Your Team With These 5 Tips

Nov 21, 2019 | 0 comments

Being able to engage and motivate your team is one of the most valuable skills you can have as a manager.

“Employee motivation is a critical aspect at the workplace which leads to the performance of the department and even the company.” – 6Q Blog

Here are some ways to make sure your employees stay motivated.

  1. Motivate Your Team Through Meaning

Giving meaning to work is an important part of keeping employees motivated.

Meaning is the reason we all get up in the morning. It’s also what keeps us going through difficult challenges.

You can help your team find meaning by:

  • Connecting the company mission to their personal mission
  • Giving smaller tasks meaning in the bigger picture
  • Playing to individual strengths
  • Asking for feedback and input on important company decisions
  • Cultivating a strong sense of community  – making sure staff feel supported

You can also motive your team and keep them engaged and dedicated by making sure they understand the why of their work.

  1. Motivate Your Team Through Growth Opportunities

Good employees are constantly seeking ways to improve.

“When you provide your team with opportunities to grow, work culture transcends the hours on the job.  Employees learn lessons, values, and skills that they can take home and be proud of. This sets the stage for happier employees and a more dedicated team.” – COO Alliance Blog

A growing team is a motivated team. Make sure your employees aren’t left feeling stagnant by providing them with lots of opportunities to learn and better themselves.

  1. Motivate Your Team By Celebrating Milestones

Celebrating milestones and little wins along the way is a great way to keep your team motivated.

“Whether you reward an entire department or give a shout-out to an individual employee, appreciating even the smallest details can do wonders for company morale and employee engagement.” – Rise

Being able to share in their individual successes, brings team members together and motivates them to work for something greater than themselves.

  1. Motivate Your Team By Giving Them Autonomy

One of the best ways to motivate your team is to show that you trust them.

Let employees have input on important decisions that affect them. This will take some work off of your plate, and you will not have to micromanage.

“Micromanagement is the ultimate controlling management style. It’s demoralizing and counter-intuitive, as the desire for control to make sure everything goes to plan only creates more problems in the long-term.” – Process

Since most people work best when given a sense of independence, it’s important to give your employees space to do their thing.

  1. Motivate Your Team By Asking Them What They Need

Ask your employees what they require in order to do their best work. Then, provide them with the tools they need in order to thrive.

“Some of your employees may be motivated by work/life balance or the value of the work itself, while others are motivated by external rewards like salary, bonuses, or recognition.” – COO Alliance Blog

Each member of your team will be motivated by different things. Listen carefully to each employee and do your best to take care of their individual needs.

Keeping your team engaged is an ongoing collaboration between you and your employees. While measuring employee motivation isn’t an exact science, using these tips should set you along the right path.
